What areas do you specialize in? (ex: Creative writing, web development, finance, activism, etc.)

Computer science (Java and C)
Art: murals, drawing, painting, embroidery, jewelry making
Home renovation

Talk about a time where you organized/built/created something.

I competed in a case competition for the business school to come up with a marketing solution to reduce food insecurity at UMD. My team and I spent a couple hours drawing up an app idea that would solve the problem, extending beyond marketing. I was very passionate about what we designed so I created a working app mockup and even make its logo and presented it to the judges. While we did not meet the marketing requirement, I used this competition as an opportunity to pitch a new venture.

What is something you've learned related to your specializations, and what are your thoughts on it?

Art and computer science are very similar in terms of the skills that you learn. Both computer science and art have helped me to develop a vision that is both original and relatable/applicable to life. In that, art needs to be able to engage anyone that views it and it's the same for computer science in its ability to continuously be useful to the customer/user. These two specializations have also given me the skills to communicate in different ways, do in depth research, and try new ideas.

What are your passions, and how do you engage with them?

My passions are mainly rooted in creating new and useful things whether it be through computer science or through construction. I engage the action of creating in my everyday life. On a daily basis, I keep a sketchbook with me where I draw doodles in until I come up with a concept that I want to develop onto a larger scale. In addition, over break I spent a couple days with my father renovating a kitchen and have helped him with renovations for most of my life.

Have you applied to Startup Shell before? No
Why do you want to join Startup Shell?

I want to join startup shell because I don't get enough satisfaction from just doing school work and spend most of my free time already working on projects so I want to find a community of likeminded people. Further, I want to get involved in projects that I am interested in that are more than just academics, including collaboration and taking a crazy idea and building it up. Finally, I
am very passionate about using computer science for good and want to use shell to find my niche.
