What areas do you specialize in? (ex: Creative writing, web development, finance, activism, etc.)
I specialize in electronics and just started to get into web development. As a computer engineering major, I have exposure to both hardware and software. In terms of electronics, I am very familiar with breadboarding and soldering. The projects I've worked on involved popular microcontrollers and microprocessors, like Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Recently, I'm beginning to expand my electronics knowledge by getting into the PCB manufacturing with the new LPKF machine installed at Clark.
Talk about a time where you organized/built/created something.
During the summer of 2019, I worked with Terps Racing's Electric Vehicle Team. I was tasked to create a website so that sponsors could look at the team's progress. Even though I did not have prior knowledge of web development, I took on the project because I was motivated to learn about web development. So I self-taught myself to build a site from scratch. Even though the website is not optimized, it paved my way to web development and inspired future projects. (https://terps.netlify.com/)
What is something you've learned related to your specializations, and what are your thoughts on it?
A skill I have developed from working with both hardware and software was surprisingly not a technical skill, but instead to be an effective learner. I've developed a great learning system after hours of feeling frustrated. I've learned to become adaptable when I get stuck in learning something new by seeking help from different sources, like professors for advanced technical knowledge, online for intuitive examples and peers for opinions and alternative ideas.
What are your passions, and how do you engage with them?
My passion is learning about engineering fields that I've no experience in. As someone who is from Hong Kong, a renowned financial district, true engineering experiences are very hard to come by. The moment I step foot into this STEM school, I was overwhelmed by the number of engineering opportunities. To satisfy my passion in engineering, I explore various labs and organizations on campus, for example, Terrapin Works, Terps Racing and Society of American Military Engineers.
|Have you applied to Startup Shell before?||No|
Why do you want to join Startup Shell?
I want to join Startup Shell because of the people in it. I admire the network that Startup Shell has a wide diversity in skillset but still able to work together and create fascinating projects. To be part of Startup Shell would be a great learning experience for me to work with students that have the wildest ideas and is also passionate to explore them.
